Abstract

The shifting landscape of digital media requires local media to develop differentiation strategies in order to remain relevant amid competition with national media and digital platforms. This study aims to analyze the mechanism of using specific local references in the practice of hyperlocal journalism on radarbogor.id as an instrument of media differentiation. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, news text analysis, and documentation of Google Analytics 4 (GA4) data. Data validity was examined through source triangulation by comparing interview findings, news texts, and digital performance data. The findings showed that the use of micro-geographical diction and local references, such as area names, street names, iconic places, public facilities, and Bogor-specific terms, functioned as an editorial strategy to build proximity with audiences while supporting content discoverability through Search Engine Optimization (SEO) practices. GA4 data indicated that local-based content, such as the “Cibinong” and “tourism” categories, showed strong readership performance because it was closely related to audience needs, mobility, and everyday activities. However, content performance was also dynamic, as certain national issues, such as social assistance, could generate high traffic when they had strong practical value and topical relevance. Thus, the hyperlocal journalism strategy implemented by radarbogor.id functions not only as an editorial tactic, but also as an effort to build local media identity, strengthen media differentiation, and increase content visibility in the digital media ecosystem. This study argues that locality can serve as a foundation of competitive advantage for local digital media amid an increasingly competitive flow of information.
